Published Thu 07 Mar 2024
Week 5, the final week, of the Indoor Club Championships & Junior Indoor Challenge commenced on Friday night, with the Under 16 Girls & Boys.
Under 16 Girls
There was a total of 20 matches played across the weekend at MSC Parkville and Monash University with 112 goals scored, and the leading goal scorer going to Ruby Gorton from Footscray Hockey Club with 12 goals, adding another leading scorer title to their record!
With the top 2 teams from each of Pool A and Pool B progressing into the Semi-Final matches, it was Waverley v Footscray in SF1 and Yarra v Southern in SF2. While the rest of the teams were placed into Pool C where they played a series of cross-over matches to determine finishing positions 5-8.
In SF1, Waverley proved to be too strong for Footscray, winning 5-0, with 5 different players each contributing a goal for their team. In SF2, Yarra
In the 3rd place playoff, it was Footscray who went up early with 2 goals scored in the first half by Chiara Virtuoso and Jaime Lam. They would then hold on to this lead despite a last-minute effort from Amelie MacLennan from Southern, scoring a penalty corner, as the final score was a respectful 2-1 victory to Footscray.
In the Grand Final, it was Waverley’s Giselle Thompson who commenced the scoring, with a penalty corner in the 12th minute. This was the only goal of the first half, which saw Waverley take a 1-0 lead into the second period. Yarra did not take long to even things up in the second half, as they earned a series of penalty corners with Molly Noonan being the beneficiary from Yarra, levelling things at 1-1. Less than a minute later, Gabriella Pezzimenti would score a field goal, propelling Yarra into the lead. This lead was maintained for a while, until Peyton Hodder clawed one back for Waverley, but this was quickly answered by Hailey Crebbin scoring what would be the winning goal for Yarra, as they escaped with a 3-2 victory.

There was a total of 35 matches played across the three days at MSC Parkville and Monash University, with 204 goals scored, and the leading goal scorer going to Oliver Elliott from Mentone Hockey Club, with 17 goals.
With the top 2 teams from each of Pool A and Pool B progressing into the Semi-Final matches, it was Mentone v Waverley in SF1 and Footscray v Doncaster in SF2. While the rest of the teams were placed into Pool C & D where they played a series of cross-over matches to determine finishing positions 5-11.
SF1 went down to the wire, with both teams trading goals throughout the match, but a game winning goal from Chad Miranda in the final minute of the match propelled Waverley into the final. In SF2, the offensive barrage from Footscray proved to be too strong for Doncaster, as they won 4-2 with 3 of their 4 goals coming from PCs.
In the 3rd place playoff, Doncaster got out to a strong 2-0 lead, putting the pressure on Mentone. But from that point on, it was all Mentone, as Oliver Elliott scored 3 unanswered goals claiming 3rd place.
The Grand Final was an incredibly evenly matched affair, with neither team managing to score for the entirety of regular time behind some great goalkeeping and defensive play. In the shoot-outs however, Footscray’s GK Baden Jones put on a goalkeeping clinic, saving some great attempts from Waverley players, and allowing his team the opportunity to win 2-0.
