U14 Boys & Girls Indoor Club Champs Wrap-up

Published Mon 07 Mar 2022

The last of this year’s Indoor Club Championships has been run and won, with the Under 14 Boy’s & Girl’s hitting the court over the weekend.

We had 19 teams competing in the Event, which was wonderful to see. True to form, it rained goals with a total of 382 scored across Event. Both Doncaster’s Zara Jackson Smith and Camberwell’s Bailey Wallace had outstanding tournaments, scoring 15 goals apiece. Brunswick’s Charlie Barrett led the way in the Boy’s Competition Goal scoring amassing a staggering 18 goals.

In the Girl’s Competition, both Camberwell and Doncaster went through the Pool stages of the Event undefeated. Camberwell took on Waverley in Sami-Final 1 and courtesy of two late goals they prevailed 3-1. While in Semi-Final 2 Doncaster took on Footscray and after ending the first half level at 1-1, they could not be split in the second half. As the higher ranked team, Doncaster progressed through to meet Camberwell in the Gold Medal Match.

The Gold Medal Match could not have been a closer affair, Camberwell scored early and added to their lead at the 12-minute mark. Doncaster scored an important goal just before half time to get the score back to 2-1 heading into the break. Doncaster scored again in the second half to level scores at 2-2. It appeared that we were heading to a penalty shoot-out, but Jade Hilford scored a buzzer beater for Doncaster and they took home the Gold Medal in what was a thrilling Grand Final.

In the Boy’s Competition, Mentone and Doncaster topped their respective Pools and locked in places in the Semi-Finals. While Brunswick and MCC secure berths in the Semi-Finals through finished second in their respective Pools. Mentone and MCC could not be split in the first half of their match, with scores locked at 0-0 at half time. But it was MCC who started the second half a little stronger scoring early and then again 6 minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. To their credit, Mentone kept fighting and scored in the 31st minute. But MCC prevailed 2-1 to progress to the Gold Medal Match. While the second semi-final was much higher scoring, it was equally as close. It was 3-3 at half time, but Brunswick started the second half strong and led 5-3 at one stage, before Doncaster got the score back to 5-4 and then like their girls’ team in the Gold Medal Match, they scored a goal incredibly late to level score at 5-5. As the higher ranked team, Doncaster progressed through to the Gold Medal Match.

In the Final, MCC had an incredible start to the match with 3 goals in the first 14 minutes to Logan Bell. That proved to be the difference and while Doncaster fought hard and scored a goal of their own, MCC proved to be too strong running away with a 5-1 win and taking home the gold medal.

A huge thank you to all the club administrators, team managers, coaches, players, and supporters that were involved in the Event in some capacity.
