Open Indoor Club Champs Wrap-up

Published Tue 15 Feb 2022

The Indoor Club Championships got underway on Friday night and it was well and truly worth the wait!

We saw some magnificent Hockey played across the course of the three days and it all culminated on Sunday night with Altona doing the double and winning both the Open Women’s and Men’s Events!

There was a total of 50 matches played across the three days and we saw a whopping 251 goals scored. In the Women’s, it was Jessie Brennan (Altona) and Jessie Dean (Mentone) that were equal top goal scorers. While in the Men’s, Cooper Burns (Altona) led the way.

In the Women’s Competition, Mentone went through the round robin stage undefeated and progressed directly to the Gold Medal Match. Altona finished second and TEM third and that meant they met in the Preliminary final, with the winner to progress to meet Mentone. It was a real arm wrestle, with some excellent defensive play by both teams. Exactly like it was when the teams met in the round robin stage, it was Altona that claimed a 2-1 victory. They were then able to carry that winning form into the Gold Medal Match, where they started really strongly taking an early lead. Mentone pushed hard to try to get back into the match, but through some excellence defending Altona were able to maintain the lead and take home the Gold Medal.

In the Men’s Competition, it was Altona & Waverley that topped each of the pools, with TEM & MCC Hockey Section finishing in second to progress through to the Semi-Finals. Both Semi-Finals were brilliant exhibitions of Indoor Hockey and we saw a number of outstanding goals. TEM prevailed over Waverley 5-4 in the first Semi-Final and then Altona kept their unbeaten run alive with a 5-2 victory over MCC Hockey Section.

The Gold Medal Match was a much tighter affair, with Altona prevailing 2-1. This meant they remained undefeated across the Event and sealed the double for Altona after winning the Women’s Gold Medal Match a little earlier in the evening which is a fantastic achievement.

A huge thank you to all of the club administrators, team managers, coaches, players and supporters that were involved in the Event in some capacity.
