Week 1 of the Indoor Club Championships and Junior Indoor Challenge got underway on Friday night, with the Open Women’s Division 1 and Under 14 JIC.
Open Women’s Division 1
There was a total of 22 matches played across the three days at MSC Parkville, with 122 goals scored, with the leading goal scorer going to Tegan Boucher (Mentone) - scoring 14 goals across 7 games.
After a series of competitive pool matches, it was Mentone Hockey Club (1st Pool A) who played Waverley Hockey Club (2nd Pool A) in the Grand Final, as Altona (3rd Pool A) battled Mosman Hockey Club (4th Pool A) for 3rd place. where Altona proved too strong winning 5-0 behind a hat-trick from Jessica Brennan.
In the 3rd place match, it was Destiny Ferguson from Mosman Hockey Club scoring first, but then it proceeded to be all Altona after Ruby Gorton quickly equalised things and then a barrage of 3 goals in 3 minutes saw Altona take a 4-1 lead into the 2nd half. It was a bit closer in the 2nd, but unfortunately for Mosman the lead was insurmountable, and Altona ended up closing out the match 5-2.
In the Grand Final showdown, Mentone were looking to reclaim their ICC title and, against a Waverley team who were looking to reach the pinnacle for the first time. It was a competitive first half, but of course it would be leading goal scorer Tegan Boucher who was able to find her way through in the 4th minute and give Mentone the crucial 1-0 lead. The 2nd half started tense as both teams looked for that next goal and the momentum it would give. In the 23rd minute it came, as Jessie Dean found the back of the net off a penalty corner, pushing Mentone closer to the win. It would be another Mentone goal in the 30th minute that nearly sealed the deal, but Waverley would not go down scoreless as Aaliayah Koelmeyer netted one with 5 minutes to go. Mentone would hold on to win 3-1 and make it 2 out of the last 3 championships.
The final standings were as follows:

Under 14 Mixed Junior Indoor Challenge
The Under 14 Mixed JIC was run on two indoor pitches at Monash University this year, with 8 teams participating across Saturday and Sunday.
A great opportunity for our new and developing indoor talent to experience event like atmosphere, each team played 5 matches over the course of the weekend. A big day on Saturday saw each team play 3 matches in the first pool groups, and then as Sunday came around, teams of a similar level were broken up into additional pools and played another 2 matches to close out the weekend.
It was great to see so many new officials participate in the U14 JIC this year, and a special thank you to our Umpire Managers, umpire coaches and team staff for assisting with the development of our officials.
