2023 Grand Finals guide

Published Thu 14 Sep 2023

The 2023 Winter Competition comes to a close this weekend, with 34 Senior Grand Final matches being played over the course of Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th Sept.

Make sure to get out to a venue this weekend to watch some brilliant hockey in the beautiful spring weather! To find a venue hosting finals close to you, view the Senior Grand Final fixture here.

Melbourne Sports Centres, Parkville

The League Reserve (Saturday 16th) & League (Sunday 17th) Grand Finals will be held at MSC Parkville this year. With 21 different clubs being represented across the 12 matches, we are expecting a big turnout and fantastic environment this weekend.

There will be food trucks, an ice cream truck, and 3 separate areas to purchase drinks & snacks; as well as a DJ on the Sunday to provide some good tunes throughout the day.

Please note there will a Netball competition running on the weekend, and a Taekwondo event running on Sunday, so parking will be limited. We encourage commuters to organise carpooling or to take public transport.

For all coming to the centre over the weekend, please read the terms of entry here, and see some reminders below:

  • The venue has legislation that stipulates at any time they may search any type of esky or cooler bag brought into the venue. The venue prohibits alcohol and commercial (bulk) quantities of food and drink being brought into the venue. Bag checks will be being conducted and the venue will deny entry and remove any member, including players, that are found with outside alcohol in the venue.
  • Make sure that we treat all venue staff and other spectators with respect and abide by the Code of Conduct in our dealings with people in the community.

LIVEHockey

All 7 matches on Sunday 17th at MSC Parkville will be streamed on LIVEHockey – so if you have family of friends that won’t be able to make it down on the day, make sure to get them watching along! All members who have an active playing registration with Hockey Victoria have access to these matches. For more information on how to create a LIVEHockey account and tune in, please view the article here.

Behavioural Conduct

We understand that as Grand Finals are upon us, there will be larger crowds and there will be moments that will bring out all the emotions that come with competitive sport. There will excitement and frustration, there will be times you will disagree with a decision made by officials.

It is paramount that we all remember why we are participating. It could be that you:

  • Are supporting friends and family
  • Love the physical, social and mental health benefits
  • Simply love the competitiveness that comes with the sport

Whatever the reason we must all conduct ourselves in the appropriate manner.

Support your team, celebrate wins but be humble, be disappointed in a loss but don’t look for excuses or someone to blame.

Don’t forget to thank those who often get overlooked, club administrators, match day officials, whoever remembered to bring the lollies for half time!

Congratulations to all our affiliates on a fantastic season this year, and best of luck to all the Grand Finalist teams this weekend.
