2022 Mental Health Round
Published Thu 21 Jul 2022
On the weekend of 13 and 14 August 2022, Hockey Victoria (HV), in conjunction with its Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) will be dedicating this round to raising awareness for Mental Health. The HV YAC are a group of youth hockey players who have formed a committee to discuss the past and current issues and barries that youth face playing our game and come up with ideas and initiatives to help improve the experience youth have playing hockey. Given what has transpired since 2020 with the global pandemic, we will be dedicating a round in August to raising awareness for Mental Health (not just for youth, but for all).
In the four weeks prior to January 9 2022, lifeline received 89,679 calls and kids’ helpline received 22,935 answerable contact attempts.
COVID-19 has greatly impacted our mental health, creating stress, anger, confusion and anxiety due to lockdowns, isolations, employment issues and schooling.
During this time sport was on and off. Playing a game one week and then next you’re in lockdown. We lost the social interactions, the support, the team aspects and the sense of community our clubs provided us. We are now back and we’re no longer alone. Sporting clubs create a community where we can support one another and talk about the issues we are facing.
To increase the awareness and support for mental health in the hockey community, a state wide mental health round has been organised for the weekend of the 13-14 August. This event is a valuable opportunity to help break down the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues and increase awareness of available support services.
On this round we’d like you to show your support by wearing GREEN. This is the colour for mental health awareness and by wearing it on the day we are showing our support for loved ones and those around us.
Check on your teammates, ask if they are ok, and remember, IT’S OK NOT TO BE OK.
