On behalf of the Hockey Victoria Board, staff and the whole Victorian hockey community, our thoughts and sympathies go out to all those who have been affected by the fires. We understand that many of our members, affiliates, staff, along with friends and family, have been directly impacted by the fires.
We acknowledge the outstanding work that continues to be done by firefighters, emergency services, volunteers and organisations who have selflessly sought to protect and provide assistance to the community.
Hockey Victoria (HV) today announced it will donate $5,000 towards the relief efforts of the devastating bushfires through the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
With many of our affiliates and members based in regional Victoria, HV staff have commenced contacting clubs in the affected areas of East Gippsland and North East Victoria to check on their members’ safety. In the coming weeks, HV will continue to stay in touch with all clubs in the affected areas to offer them the necessary support so they can provide positive experiences for devastated communities through hockey.
“The bushfire crisis has already had a devastating impact on many parts of our State as well as in NSW. We’ve always been known as a family sport, and now is the time for us all in the Victorian hockey community to show support for our regional hockey family,” Mr Skillern, HV CEO, said.
“Having grown up in regional Victoria, I know the impact that something like these bushfires can have on regional communities. I also know that hockey (and sport in general) can play a vital role in the recovery phase, and we all look forward to ensuring that our clubs can continue offering positive experiences through hockey once the crisis is over,” he continued.
Hockey Australia (HA) have committed to raising funds for the bushfire crisis and are currently coordinating a national approach to engage the Australian hockey community to get behind the relief effort and maximise the support to raise funds for those in need.
In the meantime, HV encourages the Victorian hockey community to contribute to any of the recognised charity partners such as:
- Victorian Bushfire Appeal;
- Country Fire Authority; and
- Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal;
