To begin Hockey Victoria’s Men’s Health Round, HV would like to start the conversation around mental health.
Mental health is a person’s condition in relation to their emotional, social and psychological well-being. Everyone deserves to reach their goal of being mentally healthy. Being mentally healthy is more than being symptom-free, as for some that may not be possible. It is the ability to live your best life, manage all of the challenges life throws at you and be satisfied with every day. By openly talking about mental health conditions and understanding that mental health does not discriminate, we can support one another in achieving our goals.
Roughly 1 in 5 Australians are affected by some form of mental illness every year. The most common mental health conditions are anxiety and depressive disorder. The far less common but often more severe conditions are substance abuse disorder, psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia, and personality disorders, etc.
Mental health illnesses vary in how long they affect a person. Some people may experience a single episode and others a lifelong condition.
It is a well-known fact that males are good at bottling up their emotions and with male suicide rates increasing by the minute. We need to as a community stand by our male athletes, officials, coaches and administrators and let them know that ‘it is ok not to be ok’ and that it is important to speak out and ask for help.
Hockey Victoria realizes that mental health is a series issue that clubs and sporting organisations can play a vital role in supporting the community with mental health conditions. The Hockey Victoria team hosted their annual #beyondblue lunch today in support of beyondblue and the terrific work they do to provide information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve their best possible mental health.
